Cross-origin resource sharing (CORS) offers a way for client web applications loaded in one domain to interact with resources in a different domain. With CORS support, you can build rich client-side web applications with Amazon S3 and allow cross-origin access to your Amazon S3 resources.

Good news for you is that now Bucket Explorer supports CORS and you can very easily configure your S3 Buckets to use CORS with few clicks.

Amazon S3 CORS Cross Origin Resource Sharing

With CORS support, you can build web applications that use JavaScript and HTML5, to interact directly with resources in Amazon S3 without the need for a proxy server. With this feature, external web pages, style sheets and HTML5 applications hosted in different domains can now reference resources like web fonts and images stored within an S3 bucket. This means now you can store such resources at one location, on S3, and share across multiple web sites.

Bucket Explorer has been supporting Multipart Upload and Multipart Download operations to upload and download large S3 Objects for a long time. Now, you can also Copy and Move large S3 Objects with Bucket Explorer’s new Multipart Copy/ New feature.

Using Multipart operations supported by Bucket Explorer, you can Upload, Download and now Copy and Move large Amazon S3 Objects fast, by performing the operation on a set of smaller parts of that object. When the operation is completed for all parts, Amazon S3 shows that object as one single object.

The greatest benefits of Multipart Operations are:

You can perform the Upload/ Download/ Copy/ Move of the smaller parts of S3 Objects in parallel.

If a part fails, you can restart the Multipart Operation on that specific part.

You can pause the Multipart Operation on an individual part, without cancelling the entire Multipart Operation.

You can Upload/ Download/ Copy/ Move a large S3 Object without knowing about the exact size of the object.

If you cancel the Multipart Upload, you will no longer be billed for the parts which were stored on S3.

Amazon Glacier:

Amazon Glacier is a very low-cost, secure and durable storage for data archiving and backup of infrequently accessed data. This service is optimized for archiving of data for which retrieval times of several hours are suitable.

Transition S3 Objects to Amazon Glacier Storage With Object Lifecycle Management Using Bucket Explorer:

How to Archive Amazon S3 Objects to Glacier

Each object in Amazon S3 has a storage class defined- Standard storage class or Reduced Redundancy Storage (RRS). Both the Standard and RRS objects are highly available in real-time. For objects that you do not need real-time access to, Amazon S3 offers the Glacier storage class. This storage class is suitable for objects stored primarily for archival purposes. This is also known as Cold Storage.

You can transition existing objects to the Glacier storage class by using the Object Lifecycle Management. Amazon S3 will archive these objects and associate with the Glacier storage class according to rules defined. You can add a transition rule by date as well as day.

The lifecycle configuration allows one-way transition from S3 to Glacier. To change the storage class from Glacier to Standard or RRS, you must restore the object.

Bucket Explorer interface makes all this work very easy for you with few clicks.

Restore archived objects from Amazon Glacier using Bucket Explorer:

How to Restore Amazon S3 Objects From Glacier

Once archived to Amazon Glacier, an object will be listed as S3 Object but will not available real-time. To use that S3 Object, you will need to restore the Archived Object, which takes time 3-5 hours. After that a temporary copy of the Glacier Object will be available for use. You can do any operation on this object. When you restore the Glacier Object, you must mention time of restoration, after that this object (temp) gets deleted by Amazon S3.
With Bucket Explorer, you can restore all selected files as well as folder from Amazon Glacier on one click. You do not need to restore each object one by one manually. When you are perform download, copy, move or delete operation and objects is found to be a Glacier Object and not available at real-time, then Bucket Explorer will request to restore object with that operation.

Status and Statistics for Restore Request from Amazon Glacier:

In Bucket Explorer, you can see the Restore Glacier request status in statistics panel, from here you request to restore.

In this new release, you have a very easy way of managing your AWS friends list, using the AWS Address Book offered by Bucket Explorer. You can use this Address Book to manage email address and canonical id of registered AWS accounts. This will provide you an easy selection of AWS users at the time of sharing your buckets. Instead of having to type all the details, you can just select your desired contacts.

You can see an overview of this feature in the below screen shot.

Recently, Amazon announced the support for Cost Allocation Reports, a new AWS billing feature that enables tracking of AWS costs with the help of bucket tagging. Bucket users can specify tags to represent different business areas or projects, which are used in the cost allocation report.

Once again, we are extremely pleased to announce that Bucket Explorer new version now supports this new feature introduced by Amazon “Bucket Tagging“. We are committed and make our best level efforts to offer you the new features as soon as possible after Amazon’s release.

S3 Bucket Tagging : This feature will help you seperate customer usage as well as their billing reports. To use this feature you need to add tag set on the Bucket. Tag set is a pair of Key-Value. You can add number of Tag Sets on a bucket. Bucket Explorer provides you two options for Bucket Tagging.

Add Tag : You can manage your bucket tagging using this feature.

Remove Tag : It will remove all tags added on the Bucket with a single click.

S3 Bucket Tagging for Cost Allocation

So, if you have user that you want to get separate usage as well as bill for, you can use Bucket Explorer and add Bucket Tagging on the shared bucket used by that user. At the end of the month you can separate the usage and bill for user.

You can download Bucket Explorer to try this new feature.
